The landmark deal between Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media, and Netflix is a big win for the OTT firm as it has been struggling outside the US to grow its user-base, reports Telecoms.com’s Tim Skinner.
The huge growth of over-the-top (OTT) players such as Netflix and Amazon isn’t lost on operators, and this is despite the fact that Liberty has been beefing up its own original content offerings.
Getting cosy and being placed front and centre on set top boxes is a win for customers and is a great way to keep them from defecting to other operators which are betting big on sports. Great TV programmes like House of Cards, Daredevil and Narcos, which have till now been exclusive to Netflix subscribers, now have a wider reach.
Time will tell if this will help Netflix to grow in the right direction, but so long as it continues commissioning compelling original drama the signs are good.
